            The small German town of Herzogenaurach is famous for  home to Adidas and Puma. The companies  started by 2 brothers, Adolf (or Adi) and Rudolf Dassler.
           They started making sports shoes together in the 1920s. The company  successful with the Berlin Olympics in 1936 but during World War 2, the brothers argued and they split to form separate companies. Adi founded Adidas - the name comes  Adi and Dassler - and Rudolf established Puma.
           Soon the brothers’ competitive spirit became a bitter rivalry  was like hatred.  the German football team beat the favourites Hungary to win the 1954 World Cup they were wearing Adidas boots.  helped establish the company as the national favourite.
           And during the 1970 World Cup final, the great footballer Pelé bent down to tie his shoelaces before the game started, and millions of television  got a close-up of his Puma football boots. This intense competition between the Dassler brothers helped to create the global of Adidas and Puma, and made a small town in southern Germany the birthplace of the multi billion-dollar sportswear market.
            The original rivalry remains strong between Adidas and Puma, but the  of Nike has created a new and dangerous competitor. Nike now  some of the biggest teams and players in the sports world,  Tiger Woods and the Brazilian national team. The big question is  Nike has managed to get so visible in football, given that it only began to show real interest in the game at the 1994 World Cup in the USA. At the time it did take a lot of extra persuasion because football isn't such a big sport in America. But  1994, it has made $1.5 billion in sales from the game.
            As a result, Adidas, Puma and Nike spent a lot  marketing during the 2006 World Cup. In total, it was watched by over 30 billion viewers around the world, and this is very important for brand promotion.  of the 3 companies sponsored many of the tournament teams but in the end Puma was victorious when Italy won the cup wearing its name. They beat the French team who were wearing Adidas. The favourites Brazil, wearing Nike, only got to the quarter-finals.
